Levee Recertification Project

The Village has been notified by FEMA that the Waterloo Levee must meet certain requirements to continue to be shown as providing 100-year flood protection on the floodplain maps for the Village.  These maps are used to determine flood insurance requirements for property owners.  Areas that may be subject to certain building and development restrictions are identified on these maps.

The Village Board has decided to move forward with the design and potential construction of improvements to the existing levee in order to meet FEMA's requirements and to ultimately maintain the accreditation of the levee on FEMA floodplain maps.

The lowest bid on the Recertification Project was awarded to ME Collins from Wahoo in late 2010.  The US Army Corps of Engineers approved the final plans for the project in Mid-December 2010.  Most of the trees on and around the levee have been removed and drains have been installed along the toe of the levee in some areas as of February 2011.  Gatewell structures are being installed and will be finished by April 1.

An informational meeting will be held at DC West Middle School on March 2, 2011 at 7:00pm.  Please attend this meeting as an overview of upcoming construction will be given.  Don't miss your opportunity to ask the experts questions about the project.

If you were not able to attend the March 2nd Informational Meeting, JEO's presentation can be found here.

Please check the website often.  We will be posting new information regarding the progress of the levee improvements as it is presented to the board.
