Why are permits required?
Safety is the primary reason for requiring permits. Village inspectors review plans and perform on site inspections to insure that construction and installations are proper for the protection of your family and property, your neighbors or future buyers of your property.
When is a permit not required?
Window replacement, painting or children's play equipment do not require permits. Please contact the Village office if you are unsure.
How much do permits cost?
The cost of the permit varies according to the project. Most fees are based upon the valuation of the work; fee schedules break down the costs involved for individual projects.
How do I obtain a permit?
An application for a permit must be submitted to the Village Office for review by the Village Inspector. You may obtain an application at the Village Office or download the form. All applications for electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work must be submitted by a registered contractor, EXCEPT if the owner RESIDES at the home, they may obtain a permit in their name.
What types of projects require building permits?
All construction, alteration or repair of buildings in the Village of Waterloo, or within the Village's 1-mile jurisdiction requires a permit.
Preparation for obtaining permits
Outdoor structures such as garages, decks, sheds and pools:
1. Find your lot stakes (the Village does not provide this service).
2. Once the lot stakes are found and exposed, locate the proposed work site from the lot lines and any existing buildings on the property.
3. Submit a drawing of existing buildings, proposed construction, lot lines and measurements with your application.
4. Call the Diggers Hotline (8-1-1) at least two working days prior to construction to locate underground telephone, cable or utility lines.
Additions and General Remodeling such as new rooms, finishing attics or basements, accessory buildings and decks:
1. Draw a site plan.
2. Make a drawing of the addition; noting window, door and room measurements, the location of electrical switches, outlets and fixtures and plumbing fixtures, as well as noting room uses (i.e. bedroom, family room, etc.)
3. Make a drawing of the exterior of the building.
4. Show your method of construction.
5. Submit all information to the Village office for review by the building inspector. Upon approval by the Building Inspector, the permit will be issued. Fees will be calculated and collected at this time. This process generally takes 2 to 3 working days.
