About Our Job
The Waterloo Fire Department is seeking a full-time Facility Maintenance Technician to perform standard level work in a variety of trades; construction, maintenance, and repair at our Waterloo, NE facility, not requiring a construction trades license.
Job responsibilities include:
  • Inspects facilities and equipment to identify potential needs and maintains records. 
  • Perform skilled work in a variety of building trades. 
  • Proper procedures used in the maintenance and repair of hand and power tools. 
  • Will be responsible for snow removal and grounds maintenance.
  • Operates and maintains lightweight equipment and vehicles in connection with assigned duties and responsibilities.
  • Observes all common safety practices.
  • Ability to lift and move 50 lbs of equipment and work with and on ladders.
  • Will be expected to use professional courtesy and sound judgment when interacting with members of the public, vendors, visitors, and/or other personnel. 
  • Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision. 
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions. 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
  • Will report directly to the Waterloo Fire Chief or his designee.
Work Schedule:
  • Variable shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays. 
  • The Schedule will be based on facility needs.
  • 40 hours per week, overtime may be required based on facility needs. 
  • $19.00 - $24.00/hr DOE

About You
The ideal candidate will have:
  • Previous Fire Department/EMS experience
  • Strong critical thinking and communication skills
  • Perform as a handyman when needed
  • Equipment Maintenance - Performing routine maintenance on gas/electric powered equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Equipment Selection - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
  • Cooperation - Job requires pleasant/professional interaction with others, displaying a good-natured, cooperative attitude.
  • Ability to diagnose basic mechanical, electrical, plumbing and appliance problems.
  • Basic understanding and proficiency in HVAC, electrical, painting, plumbing, and carpentry.
  • Can work independently as well as a member of a team.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
  • Education: High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience: One year of construction, facility maintenance, snow removal, with experience operating light/heavy equipment. 
  • Licensure & Certification: A valid Driver's License at the time of application. A valid State of Nebraska EMT-B or Paramedic license.  Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
