About Our Job
The Waterloo Fire Department is seeking a full-time Facility Maintenance Technician to perform standard level work in a variety of trades; construction, maintenance, and repair at our Waterloo, NE facility, not requiring a construction trades license.
Job responsibilities include:
- Inspects facilities and equipment to identify potential needs and maintains records.
- Perform skilled work in a variety of building trades.
- Proper procedures used in the maintenance and repair of hand and power tools.
- Will be responsible for snow removal and grounds maintenance.
- Operates and maintains lightweight equipment and vehicles in connection with assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Observes all common safety practices.
- Ability to lift and move 50 lbs of equipment and work with and on ladders.
- Will be expected to use professional courtesy and sound judgment when interacting with members of the public, vendors, visitors, and/or other personnel.
- Ability to work independently in the absence of supervision.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.
- Will report directly to the Waterloo Fire Chief or his designee.
Work Schedule:
- Variable shift work including nights, weekends, and holidays.
- The Schedule will be based on facility needs.
- 40 hours per week, overtime may be required based on facility needs.
Salary:
- $19.00 - $24.00/hr DOE

About You
The ideal candidate will have:
- Previous Fire Department/EMS experience
- Strong critical thinking and communication skills
- Perform as a handyman when needed
- Equipment Maintenance - Performing routine maintenance on gas/electric powered equipment and determining when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
- Equipment Selection - Determining the kind of tools and equipment needed to do a job.
- Cooperation - Job requires pleasant/professional interaction with others, displaying a good-natured, cooperative attitude.
- Ability to diagnose basic mechanical, electrical, plumbing and appliance problems.
- Basic understanding and proficiency in HVAC, electrical, painting, plumbing, and carpentry.
- Can work independently as well as a member of a team.
Preferred Qualifications and Skills:
- Education: High School diploma or GED.
- Experience: One year of construction, facility maintenance, snow removal, with experience operating light/heavy equipment.
- Licensure & Certification: A valid Driver's License at the time of application. A valid State of Nebraska EMT-B or Paramedic license. Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
